Description
Learning Objectives:
Using anecdotal information and recent research, this presentation will coach clinicians on supporting multiethnic clients in processing common experiences without making sweeping, and at times offensive, generalizations about how they navigate the world.
Course Description:
As a multiethnic individual, I have had difficulty both with locating culturally responsive counseling for myself and connecting with other multiethnic clinicians. While the multiethnic population in the U.S. is growing at a rapid pace, the research on how to best work with multiethnic clients is not. Multiethnic people, particularly those with African heritage, face anti-Blackness, colorism, microaggressions, and racial trauma, often without a community to explore these challenges with and at times without the support of parents capable of coaching them through how to have conversations about their multiple racial identities. Whether getting caught up in debates on Rachel Dolezal or Kamala Harris, our multiethnic clients are currently facing just as many pressures as ever, but often have few, if any, safe places to talk about or explore their experience.
